The Wee Kelpie is a family run, multi-award-winning, Fish & Chip shop in the picturesque holiday town of Helensburgh, nestled on the banks of the River Clyde, near Loch Lomond.
Owners Nicola and Kerr Raeburn have over 25 years’ experience in the food business and have established themselves as a multi award winning business with an incredible reputation for quality food and customer service.
The Wee Kelpie was established in 2011 in an old store room adjacent to their restaurant, when unfortunately the restaurant flooded. A week later The Wee Kelpie was open and although at that time the shop was very basic, the takeaway took off overnight and word spread quickly. The Wee Kelpie is now the place to go for freshly cooked fish suppers cooked to perfection.
The awards quickly started rolling in. In 2014 they won not only the Best Takeaway in Scotland at the Scottish Entertainment Awards but also went on to win the Best Chippy Chips in Scotland and tenth in the United Kingdom in 2014 during Chip Week, which is a national contest. They have since gone on to win Best Takeaway in Scotland 2019 and the Good Food Award for best fresh fish and Chips 2019 and 2020, also winning The Italian Food Awards Best Fish and Chip shop in the South West 2018.
Kerr, a trained chef explains that by cooking everything fresh to order, delicious crispy chips, a wide selection of fish and making their own secret home-made batter are just some of the things that sets The Wee Kelpie ahead of the competition.
Resulting in restaurant quality food from a take away which attracts new and loyal customers from near and far.
Sourcing sustainable products is an important part of their ethos. The Haddock and Cod are MSC frozen at sea, which ensures the most sustainable fresh fish possible. Other fresh fish on offer are landed in Shetland or Peterhead and brought in by the local fishermen daily.
The Haggis and Pudding is made especially for The Wee Kelpie by their local village butcher and the Sausage is supplied by Walkers in Kilcreggan, a multi award winning butchers.
The potatoes come from a supplier at the Glasgow Fruit Market and they use the best variety available each season. The majority comes from Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire, as these are renowned for being the best chipping potatoes. The Wee Kelpie Team prepares these potatoes and turns them into delicious crispy chips each day.
All packaging is biodegradable and they use plant based compostable forks and tubs. The frying range is a three phase filter system ‘ultimate’ efficiency which has lower gas consumption and was designed and built in Scotland by Scotrange and the used fat is sold back to the supplier and recycled into biofuel.
A number of years ago we added a Gluten Free option to our menu which has added to our appeal and enabled more people to enjoy The Wee Kelpie experience.
